Serial Numbers on M-! Carbine

Where would the serial number normally be found on a Winchester Carbine?
If there were no number, but simply the letter "A" , would this be considered the serial number?

The serial number is on the top of the receiver heel below the manufacturer name. Sometimes during rebuild, the serial number would be obscured somewhat by the adjustable rear sight upgrade.

IMHO, "A" would not be an adequate serial number for legal purposes; however, I am not a lawyer.

It would have been legal at that time to have no serial number, but not acceptable to the War Dept. Most Winchesters had a 9 digit SN. When the adjustable rear sight was installed, Ordnance sometimes restamped the SN behind the original one.

You may be able to use a piece of tracing paper & lead to make an impression of the SN. You do not want to remove the rear sight, which is staked in place.
