I am search of more information on a rifle that I have had for about 15 years. I have been reading through a lot of the older threads but they all keep referencing something different than what i have. what I have is a rifle given to me from an uncle. This is exactly how it is stamped on the barrel WARDS Western Field model EJN 757 CAL.30/06 it is stamped made in Belgium on the other side of the rifle is a number 5999. Now I do understand that this was some division of Montgomery wards and/or Sears. It looks like a Mauser action its old very heavy with bullets in the magazine and Nikon scope weighs about 11.4 lbs.
What i would like to know if it is a real valuable rifle or not and if it is not can i lighten it up at all. Also would like to know more about exact year of origin and any other info.
Sorry for being long winded but wanted to give as much detail as i have.

Yes it is a Monkey Wards Mauser. From this site:
http://www.hoosiergunworks.com/catalog/cross_reference.html ... scroll down to see it listed as "Western Field, 757EJN, Mauser FN 98 Commercial".
From this, another web auction site, (not allowed to name it here)...
"Ward's Western Field ( Fabrique Nationale),EJN-757 "Deluxe Mauser",.30-06, 90% Price: $595.00"
Real vaulable? Up to you. Of course asking and selling price may vary, and being a "store gun", will not bring price as an original Fabrique Nationale Mauser would. But, the inherent quality is there.
EDIT Your welcome. To lighten: Weeell- I'd look into a synthetic stock, probably around $100-$150. Though do the homework about the weight difference from the wood stock. And if recall correctly, the Commercial 98 Mauser has a shorter tang than the military rifle and maybe other differences to learn about, if you go with the synthetic. Try Numrich and gun-partscom., etc.
Other than that to lighten the load, can only think of removing the scope unless absolutely needed, & using the iron sights-- deep woods hunting? How much scope is needed? Again, up for your decision and capabilities-- the rifles accuracy sounds up to the task, though.

Thank you any ideas on how to lighten it up. I hunt deep in the backwoods out of a tent every year for 2 weeks and cover a tremendous amount of ground by the end of a 10 hour day i am beat and usually out . The gun shoots real tight groups depending on which ammo i use 1.5 out to 150-175.
