winchester M12 firing out of battery...

ok, as we know, old m12's can fire with trigger pulled. but its not suppose to allow the hammer to fall until the rear of the bolt raises up. i have one here that is dropping with the bolt only 1/2 way towards battery. how do i adjust it and what is causing it?

also to, the f.a. releases w/o foward movement. as soon as the hammer falls, the fa. releases.

The 1898 Marlin I have will not release the hammer into the firing pin until the bolt is locked up in the chamber. The Marlin has two sears in lieu of one, with out this system the shotgun could fire before the bolt is locked. I have a Model 12 and have taken it down in all it parts, I have not the kind of experiene with the trigger to tell you directley what your problem is, I know that the sear or sears and some device that controls could be the problem.

It could be that your action slide lock and spring needs to be adjusted, or the Nub on the side of the hammer is worn or broke off. In this case you would have to replace the hammer. More than likely, it is probably a problem with the first.

Hello Bob: I have to agree that it is most likely the hook on top of the action slide release and or the nub on the side of the hammer. Since both require tearing down the trigger guard, "removing staked pins". It's best to replace both. New hammer, hammer guide rod, heavy hammer spring, action slide release, two new straight springs and the pins.

If this is one of your "Skeet" Md 12's, you might as well have the bolt rebuild too, with new extractors, springs, and slide rail lock up. If you need parts sources you have my email!
