How'd I do on this High Standard?

I've been wanting a HS .22 for some time now, especially after reading some of J.Stimson, Bobski and Perry Shooters comments on them. I had a pretty low budget, so some of the "nicer" models were out. Came across this Sport King 100 "lightweight" 6.75" that was right in my price range and without asking these questions first (don't you just love questions asked after the fact?) jumped on it. From the blurry SN, it looks like it was mfgd in '58 or '59. and didn't look too bad of shape in the pics. So I snatched it up.

Questions:

How'd I do on the price? Low, high, or about right? I know what the BB says, but we know that ain't always what they are worth.

Is there anything in particular that I need to be on the lookout for on this model? I've read of possible cracked frames, but will admit I didn't get to study too much in the 15min. I researched before commiting to buy.

Can I replace the fixed rear sights with adjustable ones? If so, any recommendations on what to replace it with?

(This is really of no consern to me right now, but you never know) What barrels will swap with this model?

Good pistol? It was this or the Ruger.

I appreciate your help. Thanks.

Ben

I have 2 Supermatics with 5" bull bbls. Much rather have them than a Ruger.

sounds like fair market to me. looks like you got a new haven gun. you jumped right into the low end high standard catagory by getting a field grade gun w/o adjustable sights. if plinking is what you intended on doing, you did well. grab the bbl where it meets the frame and twist sideways and see if the bbl is loose on the dovetail in lockup. you have an old faithful gun. welcome to the high standard family. when you got bucks and want a real nice target grade gun, email me![:)]

Hello good to have you as a new member of the H.S. family . This pistol is not a match grade target pistol but I think it will serve you well and be suitable to going a long way toward being a good pistol shot with out costing a arm and leg for pistol or ammo. Try different kinds of ammo to see what it likes the best . some may work 100% and others not. Cheers Karl.

Thanks y'all, I'll check out the play in the barrel when it arrives. Yes, I wanted it mainly for plinking and the occasional critter. I had a Ruger MKII years ago, and while it was a good gun, I guess I just wanted something different and sure liked the looks of the old HS's.

So for plinking, are y'all saying that the fixed sights are good enough or that it's probably not going to shoot any better or benefit any with adjustable sights? The more accurate I can be with it the better, you know. ARE there even any adjustable rear sights that fit this model gun (without spending $150)? If so, any suggestions? Did a quick search last night with little luck, I'm just not familiar enough with with the different HS's to know what would or would not fit.

Bobski, you still have that HS thatn you were trying to get rid of a while back? To be honest, that was what got me looking at HS's in the first place.[:)]

    Thanks again.

I would try shooting your Sport King first, before worrying about adjustable sights. Since the frame is made out of aluminum. Prior to shooting closely inspect area of frame where steel slide rides for peening/cracks. If the recoil spring has weakened over time this is always a unfortunate possibility.

If the rear sight dovetail on the slide is a standard size there should be no problem obtaining a adjustable sight. In the past I have bought relatively inexpensive ones made in Italy, from Brownells. The problem will be that a adjustable rear sight that sits higher on the slide, might not work elevation wise, with the front sight now on the barrel. Made sure you have all your ducks in a row, before putting out any money for a adjustable rear sight.

actually rufe...it is a problem on field grade site dovetails. the new haven match slides designed to accept match sites have a means to allow the elevation screw to press against it built into the slide. its a little brass plug. w/o it, the elevation screw would just dig into the alloy slide when adjusted. it also doesnt have a means to stake the sight after making windage adjustments. also, w/o a match front blade to match the rear, the front blade will throw off the sighting because of their height on a tapered bbl will be too low. new haven match sights work best with match blades on bull bbls that are straight lines. best to leave field grade guns as field grade guns.[;)]

on the gun, you can swap 101 bbls with it only. in your case, the only other bbl for that gun is the 4.5" tapered bbl. i know it says sk100, but the small push button makes it a 101. they just used leftover parts. maybe john can shed more light on this. the way i remember 100's from 101's is by the breech face. if the bbl breech is recessed, its a 100. if its flush, its a 101.

if you have bucks to spend, it should take a 22 short conversion kit with no problem.

Nice find - why anyone would choose a Ruger over an HS like this is beyond me. I have a Tournament with the 5 1/2" bull & a 6 3/4" bbl and it is one of the best in my book.
