What, besides a carbine, deluxe model, or obvious condition, makes a Winchester Model 71 lever action 348 a $600 gun or $2000 gun? I looked in the blue book and the bottom dollar on a working 71 is $600 period, and as high as around $2000. I was at a gun show this weekend and I saw two of them from different vendors, one had checkered wood and was $2200, the other had plain wood, but had a recoil pad and polished load ramp/gate for $850.Is ammo still available? How is it on rabbits? (kidding) Is it considered a safari type gun or American big game gun like for moose, elk, or bear?Roy

This one for Bert. Heard that some Mod 71 were factory barreled in cal. 33 Win. True?

    Hello Geri,

Yes, and a few in 45-70 as well, but they were either special ordered during the pre-war years, or they were experimental. Regardless, they are extremely rare.
