I had a friend bring over a S&W 38 to see if I could fix it. The problem is is that there is a crack at the bottom of the forcing cone where the material is thin. Since I can't fix it for her I would like to try and find out just what I have and when it was made. It was given to my friend by her Grandfather who carried it for many years as a deputy Sheriff. Here is what is stamped on it. On the top of the frame it is stamped " U.S. Property GHD" (What does GHD stand for?). It has on the side of the barrel "38 S&W Special CTG". On top of the barrel SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFILED MASS U.S.A. on one line and the second line. PATENTED FEB.6.06 SEPT. 14.09. DEC. 29.14. It is a square butt and has a lanyard ring hole (lanyard ring missing). It has a V prefix serial number with the V on the front side of the lanyard hole and the serial # of 342420 on the back side. It has the serial number inside the crane (less the V) as well as under the barrel where the V is included. It has the S&W logo on the right side of the frmae along with MADE IN USA. Fixed channel rear sight with blade front. It is in great shape mechanically except for the show stopping forcing cone crack.
It might be more info than is needed but I wanted to include it all. Thank you for any help.

.38 S&W Special barrels are sold out at Numrich www.e-gunparts.com but the lanyard ring and the lanyard ring retaining pin is available if you wish to retrograde.
Don't get a barrel marked .38 S&W.
Perhaps others can chime in as to where you can get a replacement barrel. Remember, you may have to settle for either a blued barrel, or a barrel of longer length than the original 4in. barrel if a direct replacement can't be found. Best, Joe
EDIT
Here's one (link below). Must ask the seller to eyeball the forcing cone, and the interior of the barrel prior to sale. It's in blue, however. Best again, Joe
