Problem with Colt Pocket Pistol M1903

Friend called with a problem, but I was unable to figure it out over the phone. With an empty gun he pulled the trigger, then switched the safety ON; now, he can't get the safety to move down to the OFF position. With it ON, the slide is locked in place, so it can't be disassembled.

Can anyone help with this?

Neal

EDIT: The mag is out.

It shouldn't go to "safe" position with the hammer down. Time to take it to a gunsmith who knows these little jewels.

Remove the grips. Remove the grip safety. Remove the mainspring and grip safety spring. You may be able to juggle the trigger / sear / safety to disengage the locked parts. Not sure if it will go back together in the locked-up condition. When the safety is in the up position it can be pulled out, but maybe it's not up enough with the slide on the frame.
As noted by Floyd, later models had a magazine disconnector: it will not fire without the magazine in place. Possibly inserting the magazine will unlock it.

Is the magazine inserted in the gun?
