S&W Model 10?

I have a presumably older S&W revolver which I believe is a Model 10. The serial number on the cylinder and under the barrel is 839401. There is another number on the frame that houses the cylinder and that number is 8441. Can anybody tell me any more about this pistol? I took a picture of the gun but I don't know how to post it.

The standard location for S & W serial number is on the butt. If the serial number is the same on the butt as the one you have given, "839401", it appears to be in the range of the old World War II "Victory" models made for the U.S. government and British commonwealth militaries.

If it isn't stamped "MOD 10" on the side of the frame, it's not a Model 10. The serial number will be stamped on the bottom of the grip frame; you may need to remove the grips to see it.

It would help to know what caliber it is.

S&W put an "assembly" number in the recess for the crane, it was just an in-house number and not a serial number. The serial is on the bottom of the grip frame. Before the introduction of the model number system the Model 10 was simply the "Military & Police" .38 Special. Usually the caliber is on the right side of the barrel of a Smith. If it is a "Victory" model or an earlier M&P I would stick to standard velocity loads for it.
