im reserching a long rifle for a friend its in incredible condition for an eary eighteen hundreds rifle it has ivory set inlays octogan barrel brass trigger gourd butplate sights the only markings are ingraved in the barrel J DAVIS { maybe president jefferson davis] i could only hope,i was told the rifle came from penn, it has a unique set triggerI can send you pics if interested .im posting it under antique rifles if you want to look

Not likely Jefferson Davis if it dates to the early 1800's.

edit Great looking rifle I placed a bid and put on my watch list. I would love to own that. My suggestion don't try to clean in any way. Just like brass frame guns Patina = added value.

I couldnt figure out how to post pictures so ive listed it under pre 1800 antiques ,i dont know if any info ive listed is actually true,its what i was told,every gun has a story.

the rifle is 58" overall the barrel is 42" the inlays are silver not ivory as told the powderbox release is bone or ivory

The color of the patina looks suspect to me. Authentic older muzzle loaders from the 19th Century have a much darker even pantinated finish on their brass fittings then the one shown. I would definitely get a hands on by a knowledgeable collector/dealer before springing big bucks for this one.

The wood carving, especially around the floral designs look a bit too ruff on the stock surfaces, and maybe too new. It definitely needs an expert eye and a hands-on look-see!
