H&R 999 Timing

I just aquired a nice old H&R 999 Sportsman that has a timing issue. Upon cocking, wether it be double or single action, the cylinder lacks approximately 1/16-3/32" from locking up. I am suspecting that the gun was closed while cocked and it damaged something. Is it the "lever & spring" (as Numrich calls it ) or is it something else that gets damaged when this happens? Thanks.

Just a guess- but take a look at the tip of the hand when the revolver is open and cocked. Have seen a few of these that, as you said, were cocked when someone tried to close the action. The edge of the cylinder whacks the extended tip of the hand, blunting it (and making it shorter, so cylinder does not advance quite as far).

Taking out the hand and putting it back is a PITA. You can get a replacement hand (numrich) OR- once it is out, lay on vise, use hammer to dress metal back down to where it should be.

You might peen the hand tip while it's extended from the breech face.

with the pistol cocked and the latch in the cylinder notch insert a size rod just slipping down barrel ...if this goes smoothly into cylinder chamber without catching on chamber edge that means when latched it is timed right...so problem must be the operation of the hand...my 2cts

Sounds like the "hand" is the problem. When cocked, you have to nanually turn the cylinder to get it to lock. Sounds and looks like a PIA, but "oh well". Thanks again for the info guys. You are a big help as usual.
