If a shotgun has 2 9/16 chambers can it be changed to hold 2 3/4 shells?

A good smith should have the final say, but the answer is generally yes.

The chamber needs to be extended as well as the ejection port.

    "A shotgun."

    Which shotgun is that?
It used to be common to rechamber Browning A5 and Winchester Model 12 to 2 3/4", along with action work to make the longer shells function. I don't know about other repeaters.
It is simple to ream the chamber of a single or double gun, IF there is enough barrel wall thickness for safety. There are some lightweight guns with a lot of barrel taper right in front of the chamber that a gunsmith would reject.

If you are at all interested in reloading you could load your own 2 1/2" 16's that will perform right alongside the 2 3/4" factory ammo. You may even see a bit of savings, even using premium components, compared to what you will pay for factory ammo..

Balistic Produts has about the widest selection of wads and load recipes for 16 gauge going.

also check midway or grafs for 'short' ammo. it can be had and not much more $$ than 2 3/4"

It's easy to have the chamber lengthened to 2 3/4 or a little longer, also makes recil a little easier. Try Al at 479-524-2038
