I have a first generation colt 44-40, serial #219656. I need to get the correct grips for this gun. Will the grips off a second or third generation fit this gun if not where can I find these grips?
    Thanks for any help, Jim

Does any one know what grips would be appropriate for a 1944 production Official Police shipped to the DSC for the Boing Aircraft Co? Wood or "Coltwood"??

    Thanks

Got the e-mail OF. Answering here in case others are interested. As near as I can tell, the Official Police had wood stocks, BUT during WWII, which seems to mean 1942 and 1943, a Commando version with its own SN series beginning at 1 and running through 50617, and with a dull "Parkerized" finish was produced. The Commando was allocated to PDs, guards of factories serving the war effort and other nonmilitary functionaires. These had Coltwood grips. According to Wilson the commando "was refined downward" to increase output. On the left of each barrel was "Colt Commando .38/Special". So, if yours is the Commando model: Coltwood. If not, wood stocks would be correct. 71,000 Official Police were produced in 1944 and it does not appear that the Commando version was produced that year. Since I am not certain, I include information on both. And as Capt. Kirk says: Respectfully submitted He Dog

    He Dog

Thanks much!! It is wood then, as this is a highly polished Official Police. I have both sets of grips, and now I know which ones revolver should wear[:D][:D][:D]

    Thanks again
