Pre-Ban Magazine ID (AR-15)

Any way to tell Colt pre-ban magazines on markings alone? On GB I bought 3 20 rd. magazines. Floorplates marked Colt AR-15 w/logo. They all have the Hartford address. One marked cal. 223. The others marked 5.56mm. Mags in good shape w/aluminum body, and steel followers. I'm from NY and need hi-cap mags to be pre-ban to be on the correct side of the law. Any help out there? Rgds, Joe. Once again, Joe, you don't tell us where in NY you live, & that does make a difference in what you can own.

It's probably safe to assume that if there is nothing stamped on the body of the mag, it's preban; those made during the ban will be stamped with a marking indicating they are for LE or export only. Of course, unmarked mags could be post-ban, too.

There are many markings variations on Colt floorplates. And, of course, floor plates can be swapped in a few seconds. In fact, Colt never made AR mags; all were made by contractors who also sold them to the US military.

Your biggest challenge will be to convince the GB seller that it is legal to ship the mags to you.

To all: Joe here. I already had the mags shipped to me, so I'm trying to remain focused on the magazine markings issue. GB seller said they were pre-ban. I just needed some forum input. As you all may know, NYS is a state that has a 10rd. limit on mags, unless you can prove pre-ban status. (If I lived in NYC I wouldn't have even bid on the magazines. Sorry for the confusion-I'm gonna include my county of residence with my GB user ID from now on.) To bama...going over to the website now. Best to all, Joe

I love how the gov't thinks it is our duty to prove we've done nothing wrong, and not on them to prove we've done nothing wrong.

The earlier manufactured magazines were stamped "Colt Pt. Mfg. Co. Inc." and marked as .223. Later ones (post '69 or so) were stamped "Colt Firearm Division" and marked 5.56.

The very early USAF ones will have a brightly polished follower.

Okay Industries actually made the Colt and Simmonds GI contract mags. The bodies of these will be stamped with a small "UI".
