Since Winchester stopped production on the Model 70 I have been looking and found a few on the auction list that I am interested in. I have also considered getting the same caliber in the Kimber 8400 series and am interested in other peoples opinions on how the two compare, thanks in advance.

It depends on the date of manufacture for the model 70, some were great, some were good, and a lot were junk. Pre 64 is expensive, but the best of the breed (IMHO)

I am looking for a newer model, basically NIB and in the super grade.

I agree to a point with Old Fool that the older ones were better but agree more that the ones of newest manufacture are really bad. I was very pleased to see that winchester had come out with controlled round feed and the pre 64 claw type extractor action again and expected it to be "the same". Boy was I dissapointed. The workmanship was really sloppy. After sending the rifle to the Utah Browning facility as instructed to be repaired for several problems, I got it back in worse condition than when it left. It is now gone, replaced by a Remington 700 in the same caliber that shoots ragged 5 hole groups out of the box.I have owned pre 64's, post 64's 80's mfg and the newest winchesters. One can definitly see a drop in quality post 64 but a slow and steady increse to late 90's push feed actions. Maybe your question should be Remington or Kimber. It's all in what you like.

Kimber is a far far better rifle if you are excluding pre-64's.
