I am wondering can you shoot 44 colt ammo in a 44 rem mag?

    Hi,

In short no. The bullet diameter of the .44 Colt is 0.443 inches and is a true 44 caliber. The .44 bullet diameter is 0.429 inches. You might be able to squeeze it in, but it isn't worth it.

The .44 Colt is a collectors item and could be fired in a Remington Model 1875. If you have any original .44 Colt cartridges they are much more valuable in a collection. If you do have original .44 Colt cartridges I would be interested in some or all of them from you.

    Regards,

    P.S.

The second sentence should say "The .44 Magnum bullet diameter is 0.429 inches."

There are new production .44 Colt revolver copies with standard modern .429" barrels. The cartridge is intermediate in length between .44 Russian and .44 Special and carries the standard .430" bullet. THIS modern fake .44 Colt can be shot in a .44 magnum. Neither gun nor ammunition are faithful reproductions of the originals, but are made for convenience in modern manufacture.
Just boils down to knowing what you have got.

In addition to the bullet diameter issue, the rim diameter on the .44 Colt cases is .483 compared to the .514 on the .44 spl/ .44 mag cases.

This could be an issue in lever action or pump rifles when it comes to extraction.
