Model 70 22-250

I have found what appears to be a very clean rifle for a modest price.
It has a 22" barrel and walnut Monte Carlo stock. No floor plate.
Regular barrel not bull. I plan to use this rifle for coyotes and rabbits
I would like to be able to reach out to 300 plus yards, and was looking
for opinions on the accuracy with the 22" barrel out at that distance.
As well as any problems with the fact it has no floor plate or removable
magazine.
I believe it is a mid 70's vintage. Winchester M70 22-250 $290 canadian

    NOSLEEP,

That's a nice find for a basic varmint hunting rifle.

The length of a barrel has little if anything to do with accuracy unless you are using the open sights and then it has a bearing on sight radius. Accuracy is based on all of the other variables that we run into when working on a rifle and the loads used in it.

Is it scoped? Quality, tight on the rifle, repeatable?

    Barrel condition?, Crown, chamber, bore/groove?

    Barreled action? Bedded stress-free?

The lack of bottom metal is a plus in most cases, not a problem.

300 yards+ is perfectly acceptable for the 22-250 as long as you take the type of bullet into consideration for your varmints. Do you save the hides from the coyote and do you want to eat the rabbits? Heavier bullets will perform better at the longer ranges than the really light bullets which lose velocity more quickly over distances.

Without seeing the rifle it sounds like a good buy but if you have questions, don't hesitate to take it to a gunsmith for a good going over.

    Best.

    Thanx for the info nononsense.
I did purchase the rifle and added a Bushnell scope 3x9x40 I had
not used from another rifle purchase. The gun has excellent groupings
out to 100 yards. I am very pleased with it, and it seems it has had little use in the past. I will be selling the coyote pelts and do eat
the rabbits that I take. The rifle likes the Federal Premium 55 grain V-shok cartridges I sighted it in with.

Make sure you clean the barrel very carefully with a good copper solvent like Butches Bore Shine. The 22-250 is a hot round it can leave some nasty fouling in the barrel if not properly cleaned it will degrade accuracy pretty fast..

If you handload I have some Coyote loads that shot very well in my Encore.

    NOSLEEP,

Well, it sounds like you made a very fine deal!

It's certainly convenient to be able to buy accurate ammunition. If you decide to reload for your rifle, you should consider the Hornady VMAX bullets for the varmints.

    Best.
