Tikka/Ithaca LSA-55

Can anyone tell me what calibers the Tikka/Ithaca LSA-55's (short action) were made/offered in?

Also, is there any, or what "standard" caliber could just be rechambered, not rebored, to the .257 rob.? Does that make sense? Is there any standard caliber that uses the same bullet diam. as the .257?

As always, thanks for the help.[8D]

Hello the only caliber that i can think of that would be smaller / shorter then 257 roberts but use a bullet of .257 diameter would be the 250/3000 but I have never seen a Tikka lsa55 chambered in that cartridge.

    Thanks Karl,

I've got one of these LSA-55's chambered in .257. Whats got me a little confused is, the gun looks to be all original, action, stock and barrel. However, at some point someone turned off all the markings on the barrel and never restamped it. The barrel looks to be original, but I'm wondering why they went to the trouble of turning all the original markings off, unless it was rechambered and they just never restamped it. Or maybe it was originally chambered in .257 and someone just bubba'd the barrel? Who knows. My cameras down, so I can't snap any pics.

It could have been rolled to correct the headspace. Are there any markings on the underside of the barrel?

Sorry for the poor pic. my other camera that takes close-ups is down. The reason I believe this to be a factory barrel is because the crown and barrel length 22" seems to match another LSA-55 I've seen. Also the bluing on the rest of the barrel matches the receiver, and i don't believe it was ever reblued. You can't tell, but the turning marks are fairly strong/promenant compared to the reletively smooth rest of the barrel.

EDIT: no markings on the barrel whatsoever.

Ithaca- Tikka LSA 55 were offered in 22-250 .243 and .308 Sako made the barrels for them. Marked "bofors" steel. If they rechambered to 257 Roberts and then had a "bofors" barrel rifled to fit .25, I would say that that was improbable. It is much more likely that you have a 257 barrel that was rethreaded to fit your action. Regards, Mike

    Mike,

    Check you e-mail.

    Thanks.

Makes sense. This rifle isn't mine, and I wouldn't care except the owner is the type of person that likes to tell "stories", if you will. The story behind it, they he told me was, "I got this "custom" rifle years ago and it has a Sako action with a Douglas barrel, with the work being done by Clarks". I'm just refinishing the stock (original Tikka/Ithaca) and I live about 15mins. away from Clarks and this just doesn't strike me as something that would leave his shop this way (without any markings). I may be wrong about that since it does look like it was probably rebarreled to .257, just figured whoever did the work would have marked it. Anyway, I was just curious, thanks for the help everybody.[8D]

The LSA-55 was also made in 6mm Remington. I have one and use it as my primary deer rifle. My gun is extremely accurate with handloads: 43 gr, 4350, CCI primer, Remington brass with Nosler 100gr partition.
