1911 Serial Number

I read the replies to "1911 Garage sale/wo serial numbers" and became a bit confused. I have a Colt 1911 with the serial number 506554. Unlike the previous poster, my serial number is intact. However both the "U.S. Property" and the "Government Model 1911" appear to have been removed. I say appear as whoever did it did an outstanding job. The slide thickness appears to be consistant and the there is virtually no way to tell they were ever there (At least to the average person such as myself). The Blueing appears to be a period blue, maybe 20's or 30's. Parts appear to be period and there is no C before the serial number so it doesn't appear to be a commercial model. With the "Gov't property" removed is this still legal to own? Would I have any problems with law enforcement? Should I part it out and toss the frame and slide? I bought it off an old friend of the family's and it was his fathers in New York. They were very good people and weren't the kind of people to skirt the law. I Just want to be legal. Thanks for your time, Dave
