Why is Serial number blocked out?

Curious, why is it that on many pictures one symbol of the serial number is blocked out?
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Depending on whom you ask, it stems from common-sense caution or blind paranoia.

Huh, Why dosnt Gunbroker require serial numbers for guns being sold? That would help prevent the selling of stolen guns.

Many sellers and dealers of firearms over the internet feel more comfortable (piece of mind) not providing 'shady individuals' with an opportunity to report said firearm as being stolen from their own personal collection. Removing one or more letters of the serial number provides them with some 'Identity Theft' protection. That answers your question of 'WHY'. I do not propose that we get into a huge argument over if this is necessary. It is just an extra precaution that some sellers and dealers practice.

Got it thanks I just didn't know if it was some kind of legal requirement when posting pictures. It makes sense to me.

Is there a page or somewhere on internet to lookup or post stolen guns serial numbers to help prevent someone buying one not knowing? Thanks.

Most any site such as gun broker has a means for posting stolen firearms but as far as a firearm check. it would probaly need to go thru an LEO. Just my thoughts. [:D]

Florida has one, but it isn't necessarily accurate.

I sometimes sell guns that I get from a dealer who buys out police property and evidence guns. I have a contractural agreement with this dealer that, if I display a gun that I got from him on the Internet, I can't show the serial number. So I don't.
