1948 Detective Special... unfired...

I have a 1948 Colt Detective Special (serial 495XXX) that has never been fired. Family hand-me-down. Aside from some blueing wear on the edges where it had been sitting, its basically new.

Is this gun worth anything or can I take it to the range with my other weapons and enjoy it for its intended use? Would I be a fool to use it?

I wouldnt fire it worth more the way it is, do you have the original box/paper work make it more valueable. just my 2cents[:D]

The paperwork/box is LONG gone (it is nearly 60 years old!).

Then shoot it. If its a family hand-me-down, you should keep it. Iam sure your relatives who left it to you would want you to "use" it.

The value is probably around $400.00 to $500.00, but it does not matter if your not selling it. It is a second issue Det Special if made in 1948. I have a couple Det Specials, one an older one like yours, and I shoot them.

So take it to the range and enjoy it.

I have a very early Cobra in the original brown Colt box and still with the warranty & "Join the NRA" card. Probably had one box of ammo through it, I shoot it once in a while but not much. Guess I give it a little break
