Metropolitan Arms Shotgun

I'm tring to find any info on an old shotgun I have.

It is a side by side, looks like 12 gauge, external hammers.
Barrel is etched with swirels, stock is carved with, I think, a deer head with glass eyes.

On the plates by the hammer it has Metropolitan Arms.

Does anyone have any Idea how old this is and if worth anything??

Thanks

Going way back and if my memory serves me (?) Metropolitan arms was located in New York City somewhere in the time of the civil war. The only one I saw was a revolver. I have no recollection of a SXS at all, but what you are describing of the barrels could be that they are twisted or damascus, therefore not safe to shoot in today's loads. It should be worth something though I'd imagine. I'd keep it as the revolver that I came across was made nicely. Not too much help but that's all I got

PS. Also if the barrels are twist, they were made in one, two or three laminates and I think the three would command a higher price.

Welcome to the Ask the Experts Forum and becoming a member of <gunbroker.com>...Looking thru My data base I find referance for METROPOLITAN as being a Trade Name used by Siegel Cooper Company of New York City on shotguns made by Crescent Fire Arms Company c. 1900...
They were made in Various Guages and in both Steel and Damascus Barrels....Hammerless and Outside Hammers....They also produced a Single Shot, Hammer and in various Gauges with a Steel Barrrel...In Excellent Condition Yours would be valued at around $125.00 as a Wall Hanger...as the stock was not a factory Stock......I'd suggest Not Firing this old Damascus Scattergun......best....

Yes it is a Damascus barrel.

It is in fair to good shape.

On the rib between the barrels it says Belgium Fine Damascus Finish.

Had thought it was connected to Cresent arms.

    Thanks all for the information.

How would I tell how many laminates the barrels are mad of??

I believe that the 3 laminates produced a much finer design. At my age and my senility, I'm surprised I remembered that they were in New York, and the only thing that jogged my memory is that my shop was in New York City. Hence the closeness made me aware.
