I have a mod 490 .22 made in Canada in excellent shape, save the fact some bubba screwed up the stock installing sling studs, looks like he drove em in with a hammer! Ive taken them out and filled the holes(more like gouges)with a colored wood putty is there some sort of ebony flat black paint I could use in a diamond pattern to hide the mess, the stock is in otherwise great shape, the walnut has a beautiful grain,I may refinish in the old red brown winchester oil finish, the clip is a little aggravating to load but the guns blue is in very good shape and it is very accurate with a 2x7 redfield widefield lo profile scope..I did not pull the action apart when I cleaned it,any trick on breaking it down to the barreled receiver? thanks and very best

    catte buyer,

I'm sure you could find some flat black paint at the hardware store or hobby shop but it might not help with the problem.

This is one idea that you could try, inletting a shape made from veneer or metal. If you use veneer, it can be contrasting rather than trying to match to stock color, although if your going to stain it anyway, something close may work. You don't have to buy these, it's just the idea as a suggestion.

    Stock Ovals

    Best.
