Just bought a Contender. I have 3 barrels for it. Is there any special way to remove pin to change barrels? Should've asked before I bought!!!

Can anybody point me in the direction of a forum concerning the Encores and Contenders? I was recently bitten by the "handgun hnting" bug and gotta' get this itch scratched! *LOL*
    Thanx in advance!
P.S. I already read the 3 or so threads that are archived here on GB, that's the only rason I'm looking to go elsewhere for my edification

I cannot answer your question but you need to take two strong shots of your favorite & reconsider. I know. I got it too.

Seriously, been hunting exclusively with handguns for at least 10 yrs. It is wonderful. Started with contenders, they are very good. Moved on to revolvers because they are even more restrictive. I expect that you will love it. Good hunting.

I am not sure if you have already purchased a Contender or not, but if you haven't, i would suggest an Encore'. just for the fact they can be had in flatter shooting, and harder hitting rounds. This pushes up the limit of what size game you can hunt with them. It also will let you if you chose to practice, practice, practice, extend your range a little.

    Thanx for the replies, guys!
tsr, actually, the encore IS what I have in mind for the very reason you mention. Just wanted to be sure what you just said was indeed, the case ! *LOL*
BTW, what IS with the prices of the T/C's? I'm seeing USED stuff go for prices here on GB for better than NEW price(s) as quoted from (insert national chain store name here)!

    wtroper,
I read your reply in GD Forum[:)]
I'd be greatful for whatever you want to share regarding handgun scopes (recommendations, experiences, etc). Unfortunately I have no friends who have scopes on any of their pistols[:(]
I'll be headed to Scheels or some such very soon to get a better isea of which style grips, etc I like best and hopefully get a look through a mounted scope or two

I prefer the B&L scopes. However, recently they have changed the name on that scope to Bushnell -- When I get home, I will look & tell you which model. I believe it is the same as the prior B&L. Old Simmons scopes were good. I hear that the newer ones are not. Leupold has a lot of followers. In past years (7-10 yrs back) their variable would not stay together on hard kickers. I have no personal experience with Burris, but have friends that like them. TC scopes are very durable. Eye relief, in my experience with them is not as good as some of the others.

Are you considering a fixed or a variable scope? Using the "rifle" calibers that you have listed, I would recommend a variable. But you likely do not need one up to 9x. 2 x 6 is plenty in my opinion. Start with it on the lowest power. Learn to shoot it there and you will be happier. High power shows the movement too much until you get comfortable shooting it.

I have experience with Encores in 223 & 308. Very accurate and dependable firearms. If you are not a handloader, the Encore calibers are generally superior to the factory TC ones. Some of the TC wildcats are very good. I will get back to you on the scope.

myself i would go with the contender first , that way you can go with any thing from a .22lr , all most all of the different pistol calibers , 20 ga shotgun , 45 cal black powder , and rifle from 223, up to 45-70

sure the Encore will get you into the big high pressure rounds , but if you using then in the 15" pistol barrels they kick like a mule

either way you're going to have fun

handgun type scopes, if you're planning shooting of a brench then a nice 2x7 works well , if your using some thing like a encore in a 15" 308 say for deer hunting then a simple 2x does the job or even a good quality reddot like a Bushnell Holosight

I checked my inventory of scopes on hunting handguns. The latest one that I acquired is a Bushnell Elite 3200. I am happy with it. BTW - looked at my 454. It is wearing a Burris 2x. Had forgotten about that one. If I can help, please let me know.

You'll want to go to the Specialty Pistols Forum website & click on Break Action Pistols. Be prepared though, there is so much stuff you can buy and get involved in - sooner or later you'll be trying to decide whether to buy the 405 Winchester handgun barrel or the 25.06. The correct answer is ....

    Buy both.

    Enjoy.

    wtroper & gskyhawk,
Yes I'm planning on a variable power, 'prolly 2x6 or 7, figure that'll take care of plinking AND hunting.I'm not planning on any of the REALLY big calibers, shotgun or BP stuff yet. I wanna get VERY proficient with the .223 and 7mm-08, make sure I enjoy it as much as I think I will and see where it takes me from there[}:)][:)]
Thanx again for all the great info!! If something "crucial" comes to mind I can be e-mailed thru my profile

7-08 is not materially different from 308 in Encore. Good choice. Will take care of almost any "normal" hunting need. Plan to spend a lot of time shooting. Shooting well with a "hunting handgun" takes practice for most of us. As you develop your abilities, you will find the 7-08 effective out to maybe 300 yds from a steady rest. You will have fun.

BTW - just received my blackbuck from the taxidermist from last fall's handgun hunt a couple of days ago. Hunted with 41 mag revolver. It is a hoot!!!!!![8D][8D][8D]

    I love my contender. I have .22, .223, 30-30, 357, 45/410, and
45-70 bbls for it. I would suggest a contender for a pistol and an encore for a rifle. I use my contender for both, but I am limited by the pressure of the round. Don't get me wrong, I can kill anything deader than disco with my 30-30 or 45-70,but an encore can handle a .300 winmag and smile.[:)]
