6 BR questions

Saw an interesting gun at the local dealer today. It is in 6 BR. It started out as a Remington 700 and had a fluted Lilja barrel and modified bolt. I've heard it is a very accurate gun. My question is where do you get the brass and bullets from and has anyone had experience with Lilja barrels? Asking price for the gun is under $500.00.

Hello like most rifles there would be +'s and -'s on owning this rifle The barrel alone fitted to a remington 700 action would cost you $500.00+ with this said you are not going to be able to go to walmart and by ammo most likely it has a match chamber and you would have to form your own brass to match the chamber and ream the necks trim them for OAL etc this rifle was set up for BENCH REST shooting it would make a very good varmit rifle and maybe even a deer rifle. but like all match rifles and pistols I would want to shoot before purchase. There are some very good buys on match grade firearms but sometimes they are sold because they don't shoot as expected just my $.02

Unless the rifle has been there a while, that price would make me wonder.

I think the 1st question to ask the store owner is if he knows of any problem the gun may have.

This could be either a great deal or a waste of $500.00 - the only way to know is in the shooting and of course you must reload for the gun. If I had an interest & it was at a shop where I regularly did business, I'd ask if I could do the buy with the understanding I could return it if there was an obvious problem. An obvious problem would be excessive headspace, bulged chamber or some problem that is neither readily apparent nor easily repairable.

The previous owner may have sold it because the gun did not perform to his expectations - of course his expectations may have been 3 shots one hole & the gun did .3" groups, that's still darn good.

I'd be pretty tempted to take the gamble.

    Joe Drees,

"My question is where do you get the brass and bullets from and has anyone had experience with Lilja barrels?"

Here is a website devoted to the 6mm BR:

    http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html

There are lists for all the suppliers of the brass and bullets as well as description for bullets. The website has drawings and load data also. There is a huge amount of information regarding this cartridge and others noted for their accuracy.

Dan Lilja makes a terrific barrel for those looking for a custom installation. Lilja barrels are made by the button rifle method.

    http://www.riflebarrels.com/

"Asking price for the gun is under $500.00."

How good that price is depends on lots of variables:

    - What 'bolt modifications' were done?

    - 'Started out as a Rem. 700' Describe what you mean or take a picture.

    - What twist rate is the barrel?

    - How many shots have been fired through this particular barrel?

    - Borrow a borescope and look at the throat to see what kind of shape it's in.

    - While you're in the barrel, look closely at the rifling, too.

    - Is there an aftermarket trigger on the action?

    - What stock is it in?

    - Are there scope mounts with it?

    - What more can you tell us?

    Best.

    Does Anybody Sell Factory-Loaded Ammo?

Yes, both Lapua and Norma sell extremely high-quality 6mm BR loaded ammunition. This is super-premium stuff, made for 300m competition. Lapua offers a 77gr HP round, plus 90gr and 105gr cartridges loaded with Scenar BTs, either moly or naked. Norma offers one product--the 6mm BR Diamond Line, loaded with a 105gr moly-coated Berger bullet. Full review.

The 6MM BR is arguably the most accurate round available out to 600 yards.

It is a custom caliber for the hand loader only. See if there is a stamping on the barrel indication the neck diameter for the chamber. it might read something like .262NK or something like that.

I bought my Encore 6BR barrel used. It is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I would imagine that it will continue to shoot well for many thousands of rounds.

Was the bolt modified to remove the ejector?

You might have a fine rifle there or a shot out heart-breaker. It would take a trained eye to know what to look for in telling the difference.

Lija barrels have the reputation of being world class products.

As mentioned by nononsense the www.6mmbr.com web site is a great place to learn more about this awesome round.

I sure would take a real close look at it for that kinda money.
Setting a 700 up with a Lilja barrel will easily eat up $500.00...
Then there is the stock and trigger to make it add up to even more.
It's one of the shootingest 6's out there today.....
