What all is needed parts wise to convert an ar15 to select fire besides an m16 lower? Also what parts must be registered and transfferable to be 100% legal?

There is NO legal way to do this with an AR-15.

The only way to Legally have a Full Auto firearm is to buy one that is already Registered. If it was not made prior to 1986 AND not already registered it is NOT legal.

The only exception is for NFA dealers and they have a bunch of rules they need to follow.

UPDATE: Yes there are sears that can be dropped in. The sear is considered the "machine gun" by the ATF. It has to follow all the rules of any other NFA item.

If you give us more info on what it is you are tying to do we can help more.

What's needed is about twenty grand to purchase a legally registered machine gun. Thanks to Ronnie Reagan, you cannot purchase or manufacture any select fire weapon unless you're an NFA dealer.

Oh, I suppose you could manufacture the parts yourself in the prison machine shop, because that's where you'll be if you try to do it any other way.

Even if you could legally do it you have to replace the entire trigger group and the bolt carrier.

Your question is indicating that you may already have an M16 lower. If so, is it legally registered? Can't go any further without it [registered receiver]. Gut feeling here, but I'm reluctant to carry this any further. Sorry, Joe

There is one simple way to do what you want: buy a registered auto-sear. A couple of other parts need to be replaced. It shouldn't cost more than $10-15K.

The only to legally do what you are asking is to have a legally transferrable registered auto sear. You then can transferr that from gun to gun. They are pricey, and cost as much, and sometimes more than the actual gun. A buddy of mine, two years ago moved from NY to Virginia, so he could have legal machineguns, which has been a lifetime dream for him. He now has 4 ar-15/m-16 fully autos, and a couple of Ak-47's. They cost 200 each for the NFA SOT tax stamp, plus the purchase price of the gun($12.5K and up). If you step outside these boundaries, and are caught, you will be subjected to being bubba's girl for the next 10 years.
