    I have come into the possession of a Winchester 88 in .284.

    I am going to add a scope using a Weaver #53 base [think that is correct].

    I need some advise on the scope size, ie. power - 2x7, 3x9.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks for the help

    Distant relative just passed (98 yo...good life) and I can get his long unused rifle as long as, "I'll use it". I can't just take it...I have to plan to hunt (deer, elk) with it. Chambered in 308. Anyone hunt with one of these? Thanks.

    Hi
    You so-called EXPERTS sure are a bunch of sore losers ! I don't mind being called a smart * from your kind. I'm glad I don't have to associate with you in public.

    Grow up people !!! Throw your books away, they will get you in trouble if you don't know how to read them.. LOL LOL LOL
    If you need any help with the 88, just ask.

    Will Winchester 88 stocks interchange, such as a .358 and a .308? Are the stocks serial numbered like a Savage 99? Thanks in advance.

    +1 358s are scarce, 308s a dime a dozen.

    The 243, and 308 are seen in about equal numbers with the 308 still being the most popular. In order of scarcity, it would be 358, 284, 243, then 308.

    EDIT: Post 64, would be the 284 Winchester, as they did not susposedly make any in 358. As a side note, these rifles, appear very simalar to the lever action SAKO made also. It was called the Finnwolfe...here is a link to an auction

    Post '64 in .358 would be pretty hard to find. Winchester stopped production of the .358 in 1962.

    Post 1964 figures of production from the book by Murray "THE EIGHTY-EIGHT"

    243 = 35,733
    308 = 35,733
    284 = 32,405

    Know a friend that has been looking for a 358 for several years, just the other day he said he had found one local (north central PA) for 3000 and offered the guy 2500, no sale. He said it was NICE but not mint.
