7.62x39 Plinking Ammo

I'm looking for decent priced, clean shooting plinking ammo in 7.62x39. Is there anywhere to get a decent price on bulk Winchester, S&B, or any other type of clean shooting FMJ 7.62x39? I've tried the Russian Wolf but the stuff gums up my Mini Thirty after about 40 rounds and causes misfires (seats the round, strikes the primer, but sometimes will not fire).

Thanks

Try the Barnaul/Silver Bear zinc coated steel cased ammo.

I'm not sure what you mean by "gums up," but most of the imported 7.62x39 have their primers set slightly deeper than domestic manufactured ammo (I believe the primers are harder too). For some reason, Ruger chose to manufacture the Mini-30 so that the firing pin does not extend out far enough to impact the primer on the imported ammo enough to always cause ignition.

I've heard people talk about a modification of the firing pin so that it will move forward enough to always ignite the primers. I'd suggest talking to a gunsmith since any over-penetration of primers could be a problem. Any "adjustment" of the firing pin should be done by someone experienced with work on firearms.

Specific to your question, the cheapest stuff is probably the Winchester white box ammo -- but that is still atleast twice as expensive at something like the Wolf.

easily remedied with a new hammer spring that's 10% stronger... Check Wolfe Springs.

It will function fine with softer primer ammo such as the US made stuff... Winchester, UMC, etc...
