Importing a Rifle

An old friend of mine in South Africa had 2 uncles who each had a Mauser 22 rifle. When the 1st uncle died he inherited the man's rifle. Now the 2nd uncle has also died and he now owns the 2nd mans rifle which he has offered to me as a gift. I would love to accept ths offer but am unsure if I would be allowed to bring it into the USA. I am a USA citizen. When I was a lot younger the 2 of us did a lot of shooting together but with a family and a limited budget that fell by the wayside. Now the family has grown up I have consideered taking it up again.
Can any body tell me what would the legal side of importing this rifle be as I am sure there must be a lot or red tape involved?
Thanks

Welcome to the GB forums!
I am assuming that your double location means that you are stationed overseas and your primary residence is the U.S. If this isn't true and you do live overseas, we can't help you. You need to contact your government and get the rules from them.
If you are a resident of the U.S. then I suggest that you contact Simpsons LTD. and get the rules straight from an importer/exporter with the experience to navigate the rules of importing a firearm:

They are very nice folks to deal with and will give you the straight information. Be aware that besides a batch of paperwork and some waiting time there will be some costs. I don't know how much.
Best.
