Another Newbie AK question

I'm shopping for my first AK. I've noticed some have muzzle breaks, some don't. What difference, if any, does the muzzle break make? Is it better with or without one? I plan to use the AK at the firing range and for home defense. thanks for all your patience with a newbie, but if I don't ask, i'll never learn.....[8D]

A slant brake is cut at an angle to deflect gases at the muzzle upward as they leave the gun. This pushes the barrel down against recoil and helps the shooter get back on target faster. It is more helpful in full auto fire. Some brakes divert gases to the rear instead of up. They help reduce the rifle's rearward recoil or "kick" making the rifle easier to control. The negative with this type of brake is that it makes the muzzle blast much louder. I don't particularly like brakes due to the sound increase and feel most shooters put them on AK's for "looks" or because they want their rifles to be like the original AK's. Threaded muzzles and brakes practically disappeared on commercial AK's during the 10 years of the assault rifle ban. Now that the ban is gone, muzzle brakes are common again on commercial AK's. Another device on some AK's is a flash hider. It is designed to reduce the visual effects of the muzzle flash at firing, making it harder for the enemy to detect the shooters position.

twalker is right. so that being said, it will be louder at the range. possibly an annoyance to other shooters around you. and for the home defense, it doesn't really matter either way since i doubt you would ever actually have to fire it in a defensive situation. just having to look down the business end of an ak should be enough to make anybody crap their pants and start running. good luck
