Hi there:

A friend has offered to sell me a H&R single shot, nickle plated, 45/410 harpoon gun in its original carrying/storage chest, with all of the accessories in fine condition. do any of you know if this gun is legal (I don't intend to harpoon anything with it) and approximately when it was manufactured. Thank you for your response.

If it's made by H & R, Bill Goforth would probably have some information about it. Post to his forum at this URL.

The caliber is more likely 45-70 Blank.

Is this a "line-throwing" gun or an acutal "harpoon" gun? The line throwing guns have a restricted barrel and chamber only .45-70 blank cartridges. I've not seen any H&R "harpoon" guns, but they certainly could have been made. H&R supplied single shot, break action rifles to several manufacturers to produce the "line throwers" from the 1920's on. Marlin still supplies a company in Doylestown PA that puts together a package for ship-to-ship line throwing. Complete sets of line throwing guns, including the line "spool", several line throwing "darts" and carrying cases for the same, sell for around $700, plus or minus $100 depending upon condition and completeness of the set. Dealers that I have seen have been reluctant to sell them without presentation of an FFL, because of ambiguity - however, new sets sell to anyone without restriction - so, it's your or the sellers call to ATF that will determine how you handle the sale. I was attempting to buy a complete H&R set, for my H&R collection, from a private seller several years ago and he contacted ATF - he never did get a decent, clear response from them and the sale never went through. Good luck.

    THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES:

THE HARPOON GUN IS DEFINATELY NOT A 45-70, BUT TAKES 410 GA. THE SET IS COMPLETE WITH TWO HARPOON HEADS AND HEAVY STEEL CABLE ATTACHED TO THEM, SO I KNOW IT WAS INTENDED FOR BOTH HARPOONING SHARKS, ETC. AS WELL AS LINE THROWING. I GUESS I'LL BUY IT.

Tortz I had one of the H&R 's that was a line thrower and it used 410 shell the setup with the wire and darts is the same as I had and a nice suit case to carry it in. Along with it was ordered a line throwing kit that had darts and a ball of heavy cord that fed from the under side from the forearm. I was told that they used these to fire from ship to ship to transfer cables and fuel hoses and the wire was for the heaver transfers. The local phone company here has one they use to cross streams and rivers with line to pull lines for the phone cables. Rumor has it that one of those darts will do some damage. No FFL was used at this end and I had no problems with ATF..P[:)]
