Norinco NHM90 AK 47

Hello everybody,

I am new to the forum and AKs.

I just want to get some information on a rifle I just bought. It is a Norinco NHM90 in 5.56X45.

The following information is stamped into the receiver:

Left side: 1. A triangle with "66" inside it
2. What looks like "84S" that has been XXX'd out
3. Serial number 31XXXX then just the XXXX further back on
the upper part of the receiver
4. 5.56mmX45
5. Made in China by Norinco
6. CSI LA CA
7. CSI ONT CA

Right Side: 1. A "B" lying on its side near a ground down pin or rivet
just forward of the ejector port
2. NHM90

It has: 1. a wood pistol grip, butt and handguard
2. screw-on slant brake with spring pin lock
3. functional threaded barrel
4. something that might be a bayonet lug but it is very low
profile-possibly ground down but I am unfamiliar with these
so it might be the way it was intended

My questions are: 1. What is the twist rate on this barrel?
2. What is the best ammo for this rifle?
3. Is the bolt supposed to be held open after the
last round is fired or when you open it with an
empty clip? This one doesn't
4. What kind of accuracy should I expect?

I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place or the information is already available in another thread. I used the search feature but nothing came up that answered these questions.

Iam not sure of the exact twist rate.

Your gun should shoot any 5.56mm military surplus ammo. It will probably also digest .223 commercial ammo.

The bolt does NOT stay open after the last round. The Polytech AK I own does not.

Ak's buy their design are not super accurate. They are built to more loose tolerances than US made guns. This gives them better reliability in adverse conditions at the cost of accuracy. Expect 2 to 3 MOA.

From your description it seems that your rifle has been "upgraded" from it's original sales configuration, i.e. thumbhole stock, no muzzle brake etc.

It would be best if you added the required number of U.S. made parts to make it compliant with federal law. It might save you a lot of aggravation in the future.

If it had no muzzle brake originally wouldn't they have welded a muzzle nut on to ensure that it stayed that way?

What about the "84S" that has been stamped out?

"84S" was the model I.D., i.e. fixed stock, plastic stock, folding stock, cal .223 etc. all had different model I.D.'s, before it was changed into the NHM90 configuration so that it could be legally sold in the U.S. The NHM90's came with crappy thumbhole stocks and a piece of pipe welded over the threads where the muzzle brake was, also I believe the bayonet lug was cut off.

Since yours has been reworked back to almost the original configuration, i.e. 84S, less bayonet lug. It would be best for you to insure it's legal as far as the feds are concerned. In case somebody in the future should question how/why you have a NHM90 AK, with all the evil features, pistol grip, muzzle brake etc.,

Well, I haven't shot it yet. I am waiting on some more reasonably priced ammo that should be coming my way shortly. This makes me wonder if that's why the guy sold it to me in the first place...ammo too expensive.

Maybe it will turn out to be fully automatic too...

I just heard that there have been problems with Wolf .223 ammo in AR's.

If I were to buy Wolf .223 do you think that it would work fine in my NHM90?
