I just bought a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70...the sights are ok, but with my eye sight getting older I was wondering if a scope wouldn't be benificial...any thoughts and what type of scope..make model etc..

Any idea how these rate. Never heard of them. Looking for a scope for my shotgun. Thanks in advance
When the meekest of men raise their fist at you in defiance, you have lost. It is just a matter then of admitting it to yourself.
Thanks Dave
Anybody know where I can get some information on a scope built by The Maxwell Smith Co. in L.A. It seams to be a fairly well built scope with very fine cross hairs and a small red field type of mount. Thanks
A nice scope.
I purchased a rifle with this scope on it. It is "overscoped" for the varmint potential of the rifle. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 that will more suit the capabilities of the round, for my puposes anyway. I want to recoup some money spent on the rifle. Esentially, I got the scope free, based on the value of the rifle. So, I intend on selling the Leupold or using it as trade bait for future purposes. I'm guessing, about $350, give or take as a value. Comments?[?][?]
Not sure what chambering your rifle is, but just because it is not in a "varmint caliber", does not mean the scope does not have purpose on that rifle. When you start shooting at 400, 500, 600 yards and up...lots of magnification is essential.
Back to your question...yes I think $350.00 would be a real fair price.
I can't imagine much over $200 knowing the age. Nikon and Bushnell have both updated their offerings and you can find their older stuff (Monarch UCC and 4200 w/ AO) on closeout in the $350-400 range. Both have great optics and good warranties.
I'll take today's Nikon over a 25 year old Leopold any day (in fact, I think the Nikons and Bushnell 4200s are as good as today's Leupolds and offer a better value).
I say all this, but if you are buying this to make a vintage rifle look correct, then .... No $200 tops.
