Winchester Model 52 ?

Guys; One of our retired shooters in the rifle club donated one of his old 52's to the club. I thought I'd have my daughter shoot it. I've got a problem with the rifle and I'm not very knowlegeable with the 52's.
The trigger has 3 small adjustment screws, I'm having a real problem getting this thing to work. It was messed up when we got it. Either it drops the sear on closing the bolt or is so heavy you can't get it to release. It almost acts like it's got a small spring missing. Does anyone have an exploded view of the trigger assembly? Or does anyone have any experience troubleshooting these triggers? Thanks, Dave

Hello Dave There were MANY changes made to the trigger assm.by winchester during the long run of the model 52 /52A/52B/52C/52D/52E
along with this there were many AFTERMARKET triggers made for the model 52. IMHO the last thing you want is a new young shooter trying to use a rifle with questionable trigger. But I don't think we have enough information to advise you on a FIX. I think its time to find the oldest gunsmith in your area that may have just seen a model 52 trigger . or check with HOMER at Champions Choice www.champchoice.com or Champions Shooters Supply both of these folks go to Camp Perry during small-bore week and shoul be able to find someone to work on your trigger.

I'd suggest calling Karl Kenyon in Ely Nev.,he built (and rebuilt) m-52 triggers for Win.

Thanks Mike, My daughter has been shooting for about 5 years now and she's the high jr. in our club. The rifle is a 52D made in '62. I was hoping to get this thing shootable today. She's got to get her score in for the postal league. Dave

I'll try to post a pix of one of mine tomorrow and Karls phone #. the last one he did for me took about a week (and $135). you tell him what you want for a trigger put and thats what you'll get (I asked for 8 oz.). I'll also try to post a blow-up of the miromotion trigger , I'm at home (and on dial-up) now.

I ended up taking the trigger assembly apart completely. I was full of crud. I got it back together this morning and got everything set on it and it works beautiful again.
I'd like to thank you guys for your help and responses. And the daughter shot a 400 with her handicap, and that was with dropping a few shots she shouldn't have. We shoot indoor 4-postion smallbore. Dave

The Winchester M52 rifle, developed in l919 by T.C. Johnson of Winchester (same gent you developed the Model 12 pump shotgun in l910- I believe either Wm. Houze or Ned Schwing has written a major league book on the M52 and all the variations that might help. As a former USMC Armorer (and alternate Match Rifle team member at Quantico- pre-l966) I agree with your moves in two areas: (1) starting your daughter (or son) early, and with safe gun manners (2) doing what I would have done in the Armory, if my C.O. (who had quite a collection of BA rifles, including several M52's- first remedy for your problem is to clean out all the crud- basic rule for all weapons really. I don't have a Model 52 (yet) but I have a Win Model 75 sporter mfg. in l949 and the factory trigger is a jewel, just like on my two Win. Model 70's (30-06 and .270Win). If your series M52 has three adjustment screws, I would guess they are for:
pull weight, overtravel (or creep) and possibly, and I'm "spitballing here" for change between either a two stage trigger, (like the Springfield l903) or a single stage. If I owned a M52 I'd have the book about it, as I do Roger Rule's book on the Win Model 70, and both Madis and Riffle books on the Model 12 shotgun. I also have an older M54 (predecessor to the Model 70, which came out in l936) my Dad bought new in l935 for woodchucks- 26" stainless barrel in .220 Swift (I hand load for it)- the M54 was a fine rifle, but didn't have the trigger that the M70 had, so I replaced it with a Timney Match Grade Trigger- possibly Timney offers such a trigger for your M52- depends on vintage I believe. Good luck and 10X every time you squeeze off a round for me.

I spoke with Karl Kenyon several years ago and received instructions for the adjustments on his trigger assemblies. I have both a 52E and 52C with his triggers in them. If you want what information that I have, contact me through GB or o1kassing@yahoo.com
