J.C. Higgins .22

Anyone know anything about a J.C. Higgins model 101.23 made by or for Sears and Roebuck Company? I can't find tht serial#. It is stamped 22 short long or short rifle. what does that mean?? Any wisdom would be appreciated! thanks

    I have a JC Higgins model 103-16. It is made by Marlin and is a clone of their model 80. If you would run a google search of JC Higgins you can find a list of model #'s and what company manufactured them for Sears.

    I believe that is a Stevens product. The caliber designations refers to the ability to shoot .22 Short, .22 Long or .22 Long Rifle interchangeably.

    I am looking at the Blue Book cross over list. It shows a J.C. Higgins 101.24 as a Savage 15-120, but shows no J.C. Higgins 101.23. There are well over 50 different Sears model 101.xxxx listed, but none is a 101.23. A good guess might be a Stevens 39A or a 59A, band C.

    another question. would it hurt to lightly sand it and restain it? Is there a special paint or finish that i could put on the barrel and trigger guard? Also, the bolt is a little pitted hoe do i take care of that??

    Robsguns, thank for the info. do you have a suggestion on a finish for the barrel? Could i use a nice oil based paint that i have or does it have to a heat paint? Also, the bolt is plated w/nickel or something silver in color, can this be painted? If so, can i lightly sand the exterior of them both? You were correct about the bolt looking cheesy but the take down screw is in front of the slot for the mag. not the trigger guard. There is a photo of it on GOOGLE, search for j.c. higgins .22, then, click on MY J.C. Higgins .22 rifle. thank you for your help guys!

    Rob is right, no matter how well this little rifle shoots, it has little collector value, so you cannot damage its value much by refinishing or using it.

    The finish for the metal is called blueing and is usually done by a gunsmith. You can use a cold blueing product, see your favorite gun store and read the directions. For stock refinish, I generally use
    Lin-speed oil ( http://www.lin-speed.com/ ), but that may not be appropriate for this rifle.

    Oh yeah, if I ever address you by your member name, it'll be STTNCTS. I think you have a board record for the longest member name, not sure, but its the longest I've ever seen. Have you noticed how it makes your posts so wide? If you shorten it up some, it'll make things easier to read.

    Your J.C. Higgins 101.23 rifle is a Savage 85E or 85KE depending on the year it was built. I have the same rifle. It is worth about $50-$60.
