Anyone know anything about a J.C. Higgins model 101.23 made by or for Sears and Roebuck Company? I can't find tht serial#. It is stamped 22 short long or short rifle. what does that mean?? Any wisdom would be appreciated! thanks

The finish for the metal is called blueing and is usually done by a gunsmith. You can use a cold blueing product, see your favorite gun store and read the directions. For stock refinish, I generally use
Lin-speed oil ( http://www.lin-speed.com/ ), but that may not be appropriate for this rifle.

Your J.C. Higgins 101.23 rifle is a Savage 85E or 85KE depending on the year it was built. I have the same rifle. It is worth about $50-$60.
