purchased fn 49 in .30-06 years ago- nice metal and barrel. Stock is another situation - while not cracked has gouges, horrible deep scratches. I see I can purchase what I believe are surplus new stocks from Numrich. If I do this will it help or hinder value of weapon?

it will help your value, if it is as you say new/surplus stock.
make sure it is original equipment.

Even if I replaced the stock with another surplus stock, I would retain the old stock for future use. Just in case you want to put it back to its original configuration.

The SAFEST move is one you can always reverse...but you also have to please yourself...!

I have a 'collectable' 22 rifle that I have had since I found it in my grandfathers garage ...45 years ago.

I grew up shooting that rifle. I still shoot it and take it on trips, etc. Every so often someone ends up shaking their head because this crazy man is shooting a fine old specimen.

    ENJOY YOURSELF ! [:)]
