I have an old U.S revolver in 38 S&W cal. I know they were made by H&R. It's an 'owl head' or top break model with 3 1/2 inch barrel, s/n 1478. Hammer does't want to stay cocked in single action but works well in D/A. Any idea on the year it was made? Thanks.

It was made by Iver Johnson, not H&R. The serial number on grip frame under left grip is required to date it, and will probably be 1478 but with a letter prefix.

If it has owl head grips, they have been replaced.

You're right, it was U.S Revolver Association guns that were made by H&R. There's no letter prefix under the grip and the no. is also on the bottom of the trigger guard. The grips have US in a circle near the top and are checkered black plastic. Gun is nickel plated.

Top break .38 #1478 with no letter code was made 1910, first year of production.

Thanks. I always wondered when it was made. I've had it since the 1960's and shot it quite often. I see Numrich has parts for it and I would like to get it working in single action again. I guess the sear and hammer notch are worn.
