have a 1894 25-35 with a muzzle diameter of just under 3/4 of an inch
seems like an awful heavy barrel for such a small caliber rifle.
the barrel has the correct winchester stamp as well as another stamp?
IP in an oval? barrel lenght is 20-1/4" serial#4057xx. it also has a button mag if thats any help.
any ideas. thanks for the help. Dan

octagon barrel?
Bert, one of our Winchester experts, has been called away to participate in a service for our country and won't be back until sometime around the 1st of March. He mentioned that he would catch up when he returned.
You could e-mail "only winchesters", to see is he might know something of this.
Best.
Standard Winchester barrels for the model 1894 rifle measured 11/16 + or -1/32" at the muzzle. Carbine barrels measured 29/32 * or -1/64" at the muzzle. A round barrel could indicate either a rifle or carbine; rifles had a forend cap, carbines had a forend band. Which do you have? The "P" in the oval indicates a replacement barrel installed outside of the factory, so it seems the barrel is not original.

From your brief description, it appears that you have a special order Carbine. Pictures of it will greatly help to answer your question(s).
The barrel is the correct dimension. Regardless of which caliber was provided (38-55, 32-40, 30 W.C.F. 25-35 W.C.F., or 32 W.S.) the barrel dimensions were identical. As a result, the barrel is quite a bit heavier on a 25-35 W.C.F. versus a 38-55. The serial number indicates that it was manufactured circa 1912.
