I believe the letter "A" denotes a design change and all such lettered guns required certain newer parts than earlier guns.

Are you referring to a "W" stamped in the metal, or a Red "W" in a grip cap? If stamped in the metal some references suggest the letter "W" denoted guns that were determined at the factory to have flaws in the bluing and were sent back through the process to correct the deficiencies.

I have a mod 100 basket weave .308 with a red W in the grip cap, that is dead nuts accurate for a non bolt gun,the metal and blue is very nice. I nailed many a S Ga buck and doe with that gun, finally gave it to my dad to keep him from shooting deer with his .234 mod 100 that I had to spend many an hour tracking down. The .308 was always a bang flop gun!

I believe that the Red W was put on the grip cap of Post 64 shotguns and rifles as a marketing decision. It was used for a short time and then dropped. I have seen it on some guns made in 1964. I can't recall seeing it on any later guns but it might have been used after 64 as well. To my knowledge it had no meaning other than looks.
