It is not a Perfected Model.

It is an oddball you need a real S&W expert on. The serial number is in the range for a S&W .38 Double Action Third Model but the trigger, trigger guard, and cylinder are for a Second Model. The serial number is poorly struck, too. Also any of them from first through fourth model would have later patent dates, at least for 1875 if not 1880.

A fake? A parts gun? I just don't know, sorry.

my question is, is it normal for any S&W top break to have such large and misaligned numbers on the bottom of the butt? these appear to be hand stamped. also did S&W put the serial number in any other location. for instance on the bottom of the top strap or rear of the cylinder or maybe under the grips on the left or right side. it does have the appearance of a second model but this serial number is way to high for second model.

there are no other serial numbers anywhere. the grips are not s&w are they. i have seen them on richardson and harrington guns. it is odd. the butt does not seem to have been filled off and re-stamped. i mean if it was, they did a poor job. i am not an expert so i have no idea.

    S&W 2nd Model:
Notice the "quality" of the serNo on the gunbutt.
    Antique-6.jpg

Notice the serNo on the rear cyl. face (yours is ground off).
Notice also, alongside the cyl. serNo in pic below is the same serNo (on underside of blued rear sight) yours is probably still there. That's the original S&W serNo before the gun was, how should I say it, "altered". Best, Joe

jmecherul: givette here. Ask one of the "ask the experts" moderators via E-mail (in their profile) to remove this entire string. Explain your circumstance. I think they will comply. Best, Joe
