As for how much better it is....ask a Nam vet who was around when the chromed lined M16's made it into circulation.
1. It's hard.
2. It does not corrode easily.
3. It wears well, and is especially suited to longevity in full auto.
4. It eases extraction of spent cases, even laquered steel
5. It's easy to clean.
It's one major disadvantage, and the reason that it's not used in hyper-accurate rifles, is that when a barrel is rifled using the traditional broach method, there are always small imperfections that affect accuracy. Lapping a barrel or break-in of a barrel can be done in a non-chrome lined barrel. A chrome lined barrel doesn't "break in" in the traditional sense, it simply wears away, starting at the throat.
