Kel Tec PF 9 problem

Hello all, new member here.

I'm a 13 year Police veteran and used the forum (along with other internet info) to research the Kel Tec PF 9 pistol. Basically I liked what I read, went to a friends gun shop, held one, really liked it and bought it. My purpose is to carry it as an off duty gun. So, I immediately take it to our indoor range to put some rounds through it and in the middle of a mag the trigger goes slack.
I eject the mag, no jam or anthing, recharge the gun, trigger is still slack. It basically feels like a spring or something either broke or came off inside. I then tried to disassemble the gun and I could not get the pin out to release the slide off the frame.

Long story short, the gun shop owner is going to send the gun back to Kel Tec and I'll be with out it for who knows how long, he anticipated 3 weeks. I trust this owner and have been dealing with him for 15 years.

I was shooting regular factory fmj loads, not +p's or anything. I fired 44 rounds through it before it malfunctioned. It's a brand new gun.

Questions, has anyone else had similar problems, is there a trick to getting the pin out to disassemble the gun?

Thanks for any advice or input.

I would go to the Keltec Owners Group forum, at this link.

    http://www.ktog.org/

They are very knowledgeable and helpful regarding the various Keltec firearms.

A local dealer sent 5 back to the factory. But I've heard the new ones have the bugs worked out. Time will tell [;)]

Hi bassnleo welcome to the forum. There was a post not to long ago by someone who had the same problem with his PF9. Not sure he had a problem with getting the pin out, his was like yours, a trigger issue. He sent it back to Kel Tec and he was very pleased with their service in fixing his problem...hope your experience goes as well.

I am really glad to read about the problems with Kel-Tec pistols, since I had planned to buy a PF9. Reckon I will spend more money and get a Kahr PM40. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies everyone and I have also posted a message on the Kel Tec owner group forum.

Once this gets worked out I will let everyone know what the problem is and how Kel Tec handles it, good or bad.

    bassnleo :
Welcome aboard , We have sold numerous Keltec pistols with very good results , the major issues are feeding problems in a fair # of pistols ??? I think this may be somewhat ammo related as well as magazine issues ...My sales help here in the shop absolutely hates these (Keltecs) , but he is overly picky (Never happy)...
But they have been really great items (sellers) ??? and , Keltec has Great Customer Service ....
    Good Luck !!!

abcguns, my personal experience, after recently buying and getting used to my Kel-tec P11 is that they prefer at least mildly hot loads.

I am also starting to think that with some of the smaller firearms manufacturers that sell a low priced product, to try and still make a reasonable profit, they let their new firearms out of their factory without going to the expense of a careful, post-production examination. Instead they leave that examination to the purchaser of that firearm. A purchaser I might add that will in most cases do a much closer and maybe getter job on that "final" inspection.

I have followed the Kel-tec story closely and from a few different vantage points. I don't know as much about the Kel-tec PF 9 as I do about the P11 and others. But it appears that it is true that on a regular basis, a new owner will find that his new Kel-tec malfunctions as soon as the first time at the range (we all agree we should give a brand new gun reasonable range time before we depend on it to save our life, don't we?).

But then the story always seems to play out that the new owners ships his defective firearm off to Kel-tec, it is repaired quickly and done well, and then that owner goes on to have no further problems with his Kel-tec.

If my observations are incorrect, somebody pleasee tell me. If necessary, start a new topic thread.

abcguns, no, we are not allowed to carry the Kel Tec as a duty gun. Our duty guns are Glock 23's. We are not allowed to carry a back up gun while on duty. I plan on using the PF 9 as an off duty gun, of course have to qualify with it first.
I work for the City of Franklin PA.

Again, thanks for the replies and the welcome.
