Thompson Center Percussion Lock

There is a v cut in the front of the hammer of my T/C lock. What is it there for? Is it suppose to be there? It is color case hardened, as is ithe rest of the lock. It does not appear to be an alteration. Any help, or does someone else have a T/C percussion gun you could look at to let me know. Thanks Don

    Hello this is to VENT hot Gases from the burning powder away from the shooters face a black powder gun when fired will VENT gas back through the nipple after the percussion cap vents flame TO the powder charge .
