Can the Remington Rolling Block Model 5 in 7mm Mauser be safelly fired using modern ammo if the head space has been checked out to be okay? Or should it be restricted to low velocity reloads or black powder only? Any help is appreciated.

I had one in excellent original condition years ago. Even with lightly loaded, neck sized only reloads. I got incipient failure ( stretch ) marks on the brass,on the first shot. Because of this I would be very leery of firing one with any sort of modern loads. In the one I owned the lockup of the breech block, obviously had to much play to be safe with high pressure loads.

You need a chamber cast. A number of 7 Mauser Rolling Blocks were not the 7x57 mauser but rather the 7mm Spanish mauser. A skightly different case.

The Spanish and Mauser 7mm are the same cartridge aren't they? There is the Spanish .43 Rolling Block but the Spanish 7mm is just another name for the 7mm Mauser or 7X57 is known by.

The one I have seems to shoot ok with low end factory loads with light bullets. No sign of problems on the fired brass. I did fire the first 6 rounds with the rifle tied down to an old tire and me behind a tree! A chamber cast would be a good idea. A lot of sources say these are unsafe but I have a buddy who has had no problems with his.

The 1902 Model 5 Spanish Mauser Rolling block. A great many of these will show excessive headspce when fired with 7x57 Amunition. They were made before SAAMI specs.....
    Spanish Mauser case length....2.24
    7x57 case length.....2.235
    SM....length head to shoulder.....1.71
    7x57....length to shoulder....1.470
    SM....shoulder lgth.....0.18
    7x57 shoulder lgth......0.425
    SM lgth of neck......0.35
    7x57 lgth of neck....0.35
    SM rim diameter......474
    7x57 rim diameter......470
    SM...dia at base..... .470
    7x57 dia. at base..... .471
    SM...dia. at shoulder..... .420
    7x57 dia, at shoulder...... .431
SM dia. at neck shoulder...... .320
7x57 dia. at neck shoulder..... .324
Notice the differences...they are enough different in some areas to show excessive headspace. You could take new unfired brass...light load till it fire forms to your chamber...get dies made for those cases and use 7x57 load data. Chamber cast to be sure.
