My father has a Rem 550-1 that was his fathers and i need a receiver and a receiver plug. These two pieces are stripped out and the plug pops out after just a few shots. I think that i have the correct names for these parts. Double check if you dont mind. Here is a website with the pictures :

MC, do you have any machinist or gunsmith buddies? It shouldn't take too much talent to repair those items.
    Good luck,

"Will they re-thread??"... POSSIBLY... BUT the cost of repair will exceed the value of the rifle. If you can find a receiver it will be like buying another rifle (the receiver IS the rifle). If one of the parts dealers has a receiver they will have to ship it to a ffl near you, and you will have to fill out a 4473 just like buying a complete gun.

I'd mix up some epoxy and glue the plug in. Use an epoxy that will break free when frozen or heated in case you need to take it apart. Another idea would be to drill and tap the receiver for two allen head set screws to hold the plug in place.

I just put a Remington 550 parts gun up for auction. Maybe you can use parts from it.

Nunn, will the 550 parts interchange with the 550-1???

Can the barrel be taken off of the reciever? The reason that i ask is because the rifle you have on auction is in a lot worse condition than the one that my father has.

Just took a look at the schematic. If you want tear-down capability, have a gunsmith drill/insert a pin like the S&W revolver barrels are pinned. Only use a roll-pin. Hope this helps. Joe

EDIT: B Mc: Joe here again. I didn't explain myself adequately. Sorry. Have the G/S drill/install a roll-pin cross-wise (transverse) below the woodline on the rear of of the receiver where the plug screws in. It will be impossible to notice after the receiver is placed back into the stock. Again, sorry for my not explaining the procedure in detail during my first post. Joe

EDIT 2: Hi, Joe again. Wish you had an older S&W revolver to refer to. Can you envision how the barrel is pinned in place? The pin goes completely through the frame from right to left in such a location that it barely "nicks" the threads on the barrel. Your plug would be like a S&W barrel. After drilling through, the plug will have a small notch in the threaded area. And it will just barely be touched by the pin. It [the pin] would prevent rotation, and backing out of the plug. Should be a roll-pin to prevent the pin from working side-to-side. And please respond using the edit function, as I have done. Go to the last post you typed, and click on that little symbol with the pencil in it and type your response at the bottom. We're locked out after ten responses here. Best, Joe

EDIT 3: Yes. Complete drill-through has merit. And easier to accomplish, and stronger. It will be visible, however (above the woodline of the stock). The pin won't detract from the overall looks of the receiver after the work is complete. Good luck in what you decide. Joe

givette, the main thing that i need to find is just the external receiver, no internal parts and if there is any way to get the receiver with out the barrel OR is the barrel fixed to the receiver so that you cant remove???

I want to keep the gun as original as possible.

    Sentimental value, you know.[:D]

Joe i am getting a better understanding of what you are talking about now. The only thing that i am curious about is whether or not this will interfere with the function of the gun. the plug holds the spring guide, spring, plunger, and firing pin. Correct??

If so the gunsmith would drill through the receiver where the plug threads into then all the way through the plug and the other side of the receiver???

That is the thing i dont really think but am not completely sure that it is turning when it pops out. I think it just pops out!!! I am curious as to how far the spring retainer sits in the plug. I am wondering if i could do something like i was talking about just above. Drilling all the way through the reciever and the plug. What do you think.

Thanks alot Joe. I really appreciate all the help. Let me know if you need any help on anything. I am just not sure what my father wants to do about this whole situation. He is sort of tore up about the fact that it is messed up. We will get it straightend out. Thanks again.
