Shipping ammunition..

What is the best and most inexpensive way to ship ammunition from state to state? I am not an FFL holder and some of the ammunition is in the factory box, and some would be loose but packed securely non the less. The recipient would most probably be another private citizen. If it makes any difference, all of the ammo is factory original, in both pistol and rifle calibers.

Thanks....

    Not an expert on this, but I believe all live ammo must be shipped by UPS, post office won't take it at all. It must be declared (ordnance) so they can mark the outside of the box as containing a hazardous material. FFL not required to ship ammo. Restrictions vary from state to state on sending and receiving.

    Only way is by "Common Carrier", i.e. FedEx or U.P.S. Be prepared to jump through a lot of hoops to get it shipped. A lot of their employees don't know anything about ammo, and will try to give you a hard time about shipping, i.e. "We don't Ship Hazardous Material" etc. Don't pay any attention to this BS, ask to see a supervisor. As long as the box the ammo is shipped in, is marked "ORM D" "Small Arms Ammo", you can legally ship it.

    Well...it must be shipped UPS or Fedex. It CANNOT be shipped via postal service. It must be marked on the outside of the box small arms ammunition (ORM-D)...the person must be of age to receive ammunication 21 or older to be safe...you cannot ship it to someone in a state where it is illegal. You will have to drop the ammo off at a central UPS or Fedex hub...not a satellite location. Questions call UPS or Fedex...that is about it.

    Thanks again nononsense, worked great and the clerk even knew what he was doing!!

    "We go through this every time someone wants to ship ammunition. Here is the official code:

    How to ship ammunition.

    Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 173 173.63

    Packaging exceptions (b) Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices.

    (1) Cartridges, small arms and cartridges power devices (which are used to project fastening devices) which have been classed as a Division 1.4S explosive may be reclassed, offered for transportation, and transported as ORM-D material when packaged in accordance with paragraph (b)

    (2) of this section; such transportation is excepted from the requirements of subparts E (Labeling) and F (Placarding) of part 172 of this subchapter.

    Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices that may be shipped as ORM-D material is limited to:

    (i) Ammunition for rifle, pistol, or shotgun;

    (ii) Ammunition with inert projectiles or blank ammunition;

    (iii) Ammunition having no tear gas, incendiary, or detonating explosive projectiles;

    (iv) Ammunition not exceeding 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifle or pistol, cartridges or 8 gauge for shotshells; and

    (v) Cartridges power devices which are use to project fastening devices. (

    2) Packaging for cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices as ORM-D material must be as follows:

    (i) Ammunition must be packed in inside boxes, or in partitions which fit snugly in the outside packaging, or in metal clips;

    (ii) Primers must be protected from accidental initiation;

    (iii) Inside boxes, partitions or metal clips must be packed in securely-closed strong outside packagings;

    (iv) Maximum gross weight is limited to 30 Kg (66 pounds) per package; and

    (v) Cartridges, power devices which are used to project fastening devices and 22 caliber rim-fire cartridges may be packaged loose in strong outside packagings.

    Part 172 (Marking) 172.316 Packagings containing material classed as ORM-D

    (a) Each non-bulk packaging containing a material classed as ORM-D must be marked on at least one side or end with the ORM-D designation immediately following or below the proper shipping name of the material (Cartridges, Small Arms). The ORM designation must be placed within a rectangle that is approximately 6.3 mm (0.25 inches) larger on each side that the designation.

    (b) The marking ORM-D is the certification by the person offering the packaging for transportation that the material is properly described, classed, packaged, marked and labeled (when appropriate) and in proper condition for transportation according to the applicable regulations of this subchapter

    So, basically you need to label the box on the end as ORM-D inside a square box you have drawn, then print #698;Cartridges, Small Arms#698; UPS illustration using #698;Consumer Commodity#698; (change to #698;Cartridges, Small Arms#698;) UPS hazardous/restricted items section @ 1-800-554-9964.

    If you do this frequently, you can buy these labels from a label printing company such as stickers.com. If you do this infrequently, you can make your own stickers and print them out on your computer/printer.

    I ordered a large amount of .357 ammo from sportsmans guide about 3 yrs ago because I had read the big price jump was coming. when I received my order 6 of the boxes were .38 cal so I called sportsmans guide and told them of the mistake, they sent me a call tag for UPS and told me NOT to mark on the box that it was ammo. When driver showed up at door I had plain box ready to go. I also once had a problem with a Highpoint gun and was told by Highpoint arms to ship it UPS and declare it machine parts. Never had a problem with shipping either time.

    That was an undeclared hazardous materials shipment and definately a violation of both the law and DOT regulations.

    Not to mention MAJOR trouble if some fluke happened during shipping and it wasn't declared as ammo. That would be a sure way to make "friends" with "Bubba" for a long time!

    This is what I would do and may or may not have done. I am not saying you should do it but that is up to you.

    Get a flat rate box from the post office. Wrap everything well, even using extra cardboard and cut up paneling inside the box. Use a good quality (3M) shipping tape and tape all seams on the box carefully. Address the box, add receipt for merchandise and mail it. You may be asked some questions; answer NO and move on with life.

    O.K., I think this has gone far enough.

    The shipping code reprinted above and courtesy of EOD Guy is the official word on this process. No other form of shipping is acceptable.
