I have come into the possession of a Winchester 88 in .284.

I am going to add a scope using a Weaver #53 base [think that is correct].

I need some advise on the scope size, ie. power - 2x7, 3x9.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks for the help

Distant relative just passed (98 yo...good life) and I can get his long unused rifle as long as, "I'll use it". I can't just take it...I have to plan to hunt (deer, elk) with it. Chambered in 308. Anyone hunt with one of these? Thanks.

If you need any help with the 88, just ask.

Will Winchester 88 stocks interchange, such as a .358 and a .308? Are the stocks serial numbered like a Savage 99? Thanks in advance.

    ginger49023,

How far are you going to shoot? What size target are you going to shoot at? You may want to go all the way up to a 16x or even a 20x on the top end. For deer hunting you won't go wrong with just a 3-9x scope. for long range varminting you may want something a little stronger.

Will use for deer hunting but probaly would not be past a 200 yard shot. I hate to shoot past that distance knowing my age and capabilities.

A good 2-7X or 3-9X will do you just fine then. In fact, a good fixed power 6X scope would work as well.
