Opinions needed: S&W 637

I've always carried a semi-auto for concealed carry but I'm thinking of trying a wheel-gun. I want something lightweight, snub-nosed and easily concealable. Does anyone have an opinion, pro or con, on the Smith & Wesson Model 637 Airweight or any other suggestions?

Thanks. [:)]

The airweight's kick harder because of the light weight. If you go with one, practice-practice-ect. Start with lighter loads until you get use to it, then go with whatever carry load you chose.

That was my concern. Maybe I'll go with a steel frame. I like the Ruger SP-101 but it's pretty heavy. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

I like my S&W640, but carry my 442 more often.

Go with the SP 101. I've owned both, the Ruger is a much sturdier gun. I had one of the original alloy framed 37's, it was in primo condition when I first got it. After a very little practice shooting with mostly medium velocity handloads, it went out of time. On the other hand I still have the Ruger, it's hell for strong. I shoot Federal factory 125 grain .357 HP's, in it with out any problem. My 2?.

I like a hammer gun for SA/DA use. Maybe I'll look into a Model 60.

Good advice, too, Rufe. I'll consider an SP-101 as well. I do love my Rugers. Thanks.

I had a 637 that I thought I got a good deal on. I started resarching the internal "safety" lock issue and decided to sell it.

    Wheel gun means revolver.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

That's slang for a revolver. The "wheel" is the cylinder. It actually dates to the 19th century when "5 beans in the wheel" meant not to carry 6 cartridges in your Colt Single Action Army cylinder or any other revolver because it could accidentally fire if the hammer got hit or the gun was dropped. It was safer to load 5 cartridges in the "wheel" and let the hammer rest on the empty chamber.

I have both steel & alloy, my most often used are a Model 49 and a Model 640. I'm about 6'5" & 200 lbs, can hide them even when wearing T shirt & shorts and the difference in carrying weight is not nearly as significant as the difference in recoil.
