Fair Price for an FFL Transfer

I am shipping a M1 to a guy who lives in California. He said his FFL wanted to charge him $150 to do the transfer. Is this normal? If not, what's a fair price for a rifle like this?

The bidder is about ready to jump ship on the auction because of this.

Tell him to look under the tools for buyers on the auction side, and locate another deealer near him. It sounds high, but the dealer is using his license. Think about it...you are basically telling the dealer you do not want to buy this from him, unless it is a collectable that is hard to find, but you want to use his license, and his phone, and for him to use his time to fill out the paperwork, and make the call, and be an intermediary. Now you also want to tell him how much he can charge?

$150 is wayyyy high. The going rate is $20 to $25.

This is out in Alamo, California. Apparently things are different there? Does anyone have experience with that area or state? I called 2 Shops out there so far and one said $100 and the other said $75.

Interestingly enough it appears that $75 is the LOW price out that way. I called about 5 or 6 shops and the prices Range from $75 to $100 to $135 - all lower than the $150 quoted to my bidder but not nearly as low as $25.

Cali has some crazy fees for callins, etc. IIRC $60 just for the DROS phone call...

Makes me glad I live in Fl... an expensive xfer here is 35, most shops either will chase you out for asking about a xfer or charge $20-25

I pay $10.00 for long guns and $20.00 for "restricted" ( handguns & dreaded Black rifles ). $150.00 is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much!!!

Good of you to do the checking for him. He should have had that all lined up before he won let alone bid.
It is very high to me but I don't live there. I have bid on a few guns and when it gets past the price, shipping and FFL charge that I am willing to pay I quit bidding. Good luck to you.

No - I got Screwed. I went out of my way to find it for $75 and still he couldn't do it.

Nice way to outbid a buyer for $5 who probably would have payed.

Can I just relist the Gun immediately knowing full well he does not intend to pay?

No offense to the guys not from CA who posted $150.00 is way high, but it's only a bit high. I'm in CA - $75.00 is considered a good price for the transfer fees, DROS & such. The DROS is done by computer, not by phone & costs $10.00, $15.00 or $35.00 - can't recall which. This stinks of course, but that's the way it is for now.

The cost of the gun has nothing to do with the transfer fee - that guy would have been charged the same $150.00 by his FFL even if he ordered a Mosin Nagant for $85.00.

The $150.00 applies only to transfers - when we buy direct from a dealer the state fees are usually about $40.00 or so. Not counting the damn gun lock - of course these fees are just another way the state discourages alot of people from buying guns.

I'd send him an e-mail which states he's screwed up the deal (setting up a receiving FFL is his job, not yours) & that absent him informing you he's completing the deal you'll list negative feedback and you'll relist. I'd give him 24 hrs.

I pay $32, and that's the low end. $55 is the highest I know of. There are a few that if I was heading that direction I'd use as they are $10-20 but by the time I get there and back it would cost me just as much b/c they are out of my way. But $150 is WAY to much.
