Do NOT buy any of the chinese or philipino junk guns. Save up and routinely check the auctions for a genuine USGI 1911 or a Colt original civilian version!!!!!

It will definately be worth the time and money invested.

Buy a used G.I. or Colt but make sure it has not had Bubba changing parts or doing a home gun smith job other then that a plain Jane model of Springfield will be the best bang for the buck.

Thanks Ruger 41 the model 1927 colt slipped my mind and is in fact A GREAT STARTER 1911. I can not recommend any brand of ASIA made 1911 and there are many brands some sound like they were made in The U.S. like High Standard and many others some are good and some are junk a real CRAP SHOOT.

If you search these posts for "best 45" or similar, you will get a great deal of information.

If you are not very familiar with the 1911, you may not notice some of the 'bubba - ing' others have mentioned.

perry shooter mentioned the Springfield entry model, as 'GI' model.
(They make the "G.I." and the "Mil-spec", the mil-spec is tuned up a bit.) Stay with perry shooter's advice, the G.I. model. People have been known to "buy a mil-spec" .... but really got a GI. (Maybe in a Milspec box) After you get to love your GI you will be a knowledgable 1911 owner. And it is quite likely that you will keep that GI for the rest of your life.
    ENJOY !!

The Charles Daly's are very fine starter 1911's. Have two running at the range with tens of thousands of rounds out of them and no complaints.

You might be able to find a good used Colt 1911 made in Argentina. They were licensed by Colt for the Argentina military and all parts enterchange. I bought one a few years ago for $350 and did some customizing to it.

I second the Springfields. The Filipino guns are getting better, and STI is actually using frames and slides from there. I am not yet ready to trust them, but I see them getting better.

See if you can find a used Taurus as well, great guns.

i hear the taurus 1911 is a really good buy for the money. you could get one for a little more than $100 plus what you've already saved. personally i'd go with the springfield, but if you don't want to wait/save for that long, then go with the taurus
