I have a friend that is thinking about buying a barrel for his Encore. He is thinking about the .375 H&H. Has anyone had any experience with this round in the Encore? He will be using it for elk and bear...Thanks Bull

I have a 375 H & H Encore, however it is a 15" handgun barrel. I presume your pal is a bit more conservative (and sensible) in such matters and you're asking about a rifle length barrel, yes? I do have a Ruger #1 in 375 H & H and I think you'll find it suitable for anything that walks in North America. If you reload you can generally use 220 to 300 grain bullets with good success. I lean towards the Speer 235 semi RN as a very good all around bullet, the Hornady 225 spire point is excellent also.

The 375 is probably a bit much for elk & bear - assuming you're talking black bears at about 600 lbs or so - but not terribly so. It has a flatter trajectory than most assume and recoil is not too bad. Although I think the design & weight of the Encore will probably amplify felt recoil. It's a light gun and the stock/pistol grip design makes me believe recoil would tend to impulse up more than directly to the rear.

I have a .375H&H barrel on my Encore. It is very accurate and a hoot to shoot. The Encore platform makes an awesome platform for multi-caliber gun ownership. Since most game is killed by the first shot I have never felt under-gunned with the Encore. Go for it, he will never be sorry.

If it were my friend, I would direct him towards the .375 JDJ instead of the H&H. No real reason other than the JDJ cartridge was designed for the T/C guns, so it adds a little flair.

Make sure you tell him to get a scope with plenty of eye relief. The Encore doesn't have a lot of beef to soak up recoil, so shooting the H&H out of it is going to require some room. That is of course unless he likes black eyes and broken noses.[;)]

Braking or Porting will necessitate the need for hearing protection even when hunting. If he can get one that you can "turn-off" then that is probably the ticket. Open when practicing, closed when hunting, because the as the old addage goes, "You don't feel the recoil when pulling the trigger on an animal."

I've got a Sako L61 in 375 H&H. Recoil is not a problem, when you have your game in the sights the noise is not a problem and when looking for factory ammo supply is not a problem.
Regardless what you are hunting...that too is no problem.
